UK machine-vision integration for production lines

Carton quality inspection

Carton inspection for closure, print and product assurance

Inspect folding cartons inline for correct closure, printed identity, traceability and presentation. Camera views can be positioned around the pack to assess flaps, labels, codes and orientation without slowing the cartoning process.

Inspection overview

Verification from erected carton to finished pack

Carton inspection can be placed at several points: after erection, after product loading, after leaflet insertion, after closure or immediately before case packing. Locating each check where the feature is visible improves reliability and fault diagnosis.

Vision can verify visible flap position, glue pattern where exposed, print, labels, codes and gross damage. Presence sensors or additional cameras can confirm components before closure, with results consolidated into one tracked reject decision.

Checks that can be combined

The final inspection set is selected from the visible features, risk, product presentation and achievable image resolution.

  • Carton presence, orientation and colour
  • Top and bottom flap position
  • Visible glue or closure feature checks
  • Artwork and product variant verification
  • Label presence, position and identity
  • Date, lot, barcode and 2D code reading
  • Visible crush, tear or open-carton defects
  • Product or leaflet presence before closure

Application details we review

Early clarity on these points helps avoid false rejects, blind spots and mechanical changes late in the project.

  • Carton finish, varnish and reflective print
  • Open versus closed inspection points
  • Variant count and changeover control
  • Code location and print technology
  • Pack spacing and camera access
  • Link to cartoner and reject controls

Place each check where it is most visible

A line review maps every required decision to the best physical inspection point, rather than forcing all checks into one compromised view.

Feasibility work establishes the camera view, lens, light, exposure and image-processing approach. We then define the enclosure, conveyor changes, controls, operator interface and rejection needed for production.

How we deliver

From feasibility to supported production

Inspection performance depends on the complete cell, so optics, mechanics, controls and rejection are developed as one project.

Define

Products, defects, speeds, environment and acceptance criteria.

Prove

Sample imaging, lighting trials and achievable defect limits.

Integrate

Mechanical design, guarding, PLC, recipes and reject tracking.

Support

Commissioning, operator training and production handover.

Carton inspection questions

Technical questions, answered clearly

Can the system check that a leaflet is inside a carton?

If the leaflet is visible before closure, a camera or presence sensor can verify it. Once an opaque carton is closed, vision cannot see through it, so the check must occur earlier or use another sensing method.

Can vision inspect top and bottom carton flaps?

Yes. Cameras can be arranged above, below or at an angle where conveyor design provides a clear view. The required flap and glue features must be exposed.

Can the correct artwork be verified?

Yes. Pattern matching, colour tools, OCR and code reading can distinguish approved variants, subject to the required field of view and resolution.

Can damaged cartons be detected?

Visible open flaps, tears, crush deformation and profile changes may be detected. Trials establish the boundary between normal board variation and actionable damage.

Can data be sent to the line PLC?

Yes. Pass/fail, fault, recipe and status signals can be exchanged with the cartoner or line PLC using the selected industrial interface.
