UK machine-vision integration for production lines

Tray and sleeve inspection

Tray and sleeve inspection for complete retail packs

Combine top, side and underside views to check lidded trays and sleeved packs for visible seal conditions, correct sleeve placement, label identity and date-code quality before case packing.

Inspection overview

Inspect the pack after sealing and sleeving

Trays can carry reflective film, textured food, clear lids and printed sleeves that hide different areas of the pack. Inspection points should therefore be considered before and after sleeve application so the seal and presentation checks each have a clear view.

Oxford Vision Systems can integrate cameras with tray sealers, sleevers, labellers, conveyors and downstream reject equipment. Results can be stored or passed to line controls for production monitoring and fault response.

Checks that can be combined

The final inspection set is selected from the visible features, risk, product presentation and achievable image resolution.

  • Tray presence, orientation and profile
  • Visible lidding-film and seal-edge condition
  • Product or contamination at the tray rim
  • Sleeve presence, alignment and correct variant
  • Label presence, position and identity
  • Date and lot code verification
  • Barcode and 2D code reading
  • Damaged, open or deformed pack detection

Application details we review

Early clarity on these points helps avoid false rejects, blind spots and mechanical changes late in the project.

  • Clear, printed or reflective lidding film
  • Tray rim visibility and food presentation
  • Sleeve coverage before and after application
  • Wet, chilled or condensation-prone packs
  • Under-tray label or code location
  • Reject handling without pack damage

Keep seal and sleeve checks visible

We identify which features disappear after sleeving and position the inspection stages accordingly, with tracking between them where required.

Feasibility work establishes the camera view, lens, light, exposure and image-processing approach. We then define the enclosure, conveyor changes, controls, operator interface and rejection needed for production.

How we deliver

From feasibility to supported production

Inspection performance depends on the complete cell, so optics, mechanics, controls and rejection are developed as one project.

Define

Products, defects, speeds, environment and acceptance criteria.

Prove

Sample imaging, lighting trials and achievable defect limits.

Integrate

Mechanical design, guarding, PLC, recipes and reject tracking.

Support

Commissioning, operator training and production handover.

Tray & sleeve inspection questions

Technical questions, answered clearly

Can vision inspect a tray seal through a printed sleeve?

Only the exposed areas can be inspected reliably. Critical seal checks are normally positioned before the sleeve hides the tray rim, then sleeve and code checks follow downstream.

Can contamination in the seal area be detected?

Visible product crossing the tray rim or seal region may be detected when contrast and presentation are sufficient. Representative product trials define achievable sensitivity.

Can underside labels be inspected?

Yes, if the conveyor provides a clear viewing gap or suitable transfer arrangement. Camera protection and hygiene access are designed around the line.

Can reflective lidding film be handled?

Controlled diffuse lighting, polarisation and exposure strategies can reduce glare. The exact film and normal wrinkle range should be included in trials.

Can sleeve artwork and barcode be checked together?

Yes. One or more views can verify sleeve identity, position and machine-readable codes, provided the required resolution and print contrast are available.
