Label verification

Label inspection for identity, position and print quality

Confirm that every product carries the correct label, in the correct position, with the required readable code. Inspection can cover front, back, wraparound, top, base and tamper labels using one or more synchronised camera views.

Inspection overview

Control label application and product identity

Curved containers, transparent labels, metallic foils and variable artwork create very different imaging requirements. We select lenses and lighting to separate the label edge, printed content and container background at production speed.

Pattern matching, OCR, OCV, barcode reading and dimensional tools can be combined within one recipe. Results may be tied to upstream product data or a selected job to reduce the risk of the wrong label variant entering production.

Checks that can be combined

The final inspection set is selected from the visible features, risk, product presentation and achievable image resolution.

  • Label presence and count
  • Horizontal and vertical position
  • Rotation, skew, flagging and wrinkles
  • Front-to-back label relationship
  • Correct artwork or product variant
  • Date, lot and variable print verification
  • 1D barcode and 2D code readability
  • Tamper, neck, top or base label presence

Application details we review

Early clarity on these points helps avoid false rejects, blind spots and mechanical changes late in the project.

  • Label material, transparency and reflectivity
  • Container curvature and rotation
  • Required edge-position tolerance
  • Artwork change frequency
  • Code quality and printer variation
  • Full-wrap or multi-panel coverage

Build the inspection around approved label samples

Artwork masters, production labels and known defects help define the correct match regions, code rules and position tolerances.

Feasibility work establishes the camera view, lens, light, exposure and image-processing approach. We then define the enclosure, conveyor changes, controls, operator interface and rejection needed for production.

How we deliver

From feasibility to supported production

Inspection performance depends on the complete cell, so optics, mechanics, controls and rejection are developed as one project.

Define

Products, defects, speeds, environment and acceptance criteria.

Prove

Sample imaging, lighting trials and achievable defect limits.

Integrate

Mechanical design, guarding, PLC, recipes and reject tracking.

Support

Commissioning, operator training and production handover.

Label inspection questions

Technical questions, answered clearly

Can wraparound labels be inspected all the way around?

Yes, using multiple cameras, controlled product rotation or suitable 360-degree imaging. The best method depends on container stability, line speed and label surface coverage.

Can the system identify the wrong product label?

Yes. Pattern, colour, text and code tools can compare the presented label with the active recipe or approved data.

Can label wrinkles be detected?

Some wrinkles, bubbles and flagging can be detected when they alter an observable edge, texture or print feature. Transparent and highly reflective labels require sample testing.

Can barcodes be graded?

Selected readers and software can assess code quality, but a formal verification grade requires the correct standards-based verifier, geometry and calibration. We will distinguish reading from verification in the specification.

Can labels on the base of a pack be inspected?

Yes, where the conveyor has a viewing gap or transfer arrangement that exposes the base without compromising product handling.
