UK machine-vision integration for production lines

End-of-line inspection

Case and pallet inspection for end-of-line assurance

Extend automated quality control beyond the primary pack. Inspect shipping cases for closure, identity and code quality, then verify pallet patterns, missing loads and label presentation before warehouse release.

Inspection overview

Connect product traceability to the despatch unit

Case inspection can confirm that the correct label and code are present, readable and associated with the active production order. Cameras can also check flap closure, tape position, gross damage, orientation and selected pack-count evidence before palletising.

At the pallet, fixed cameras or triggered imaging can assess visible layer patterns, missing or protruding cases, pallet labels and overall load profile. Results can be exchanged with palletiser, warehouse or line-control systems where interfaces are available.

Checks that can be combined

The final inspection set is selected from the visible features, risk, product presentation and achievable image resolution.

  • Case presence, orientation and dimensions
  • Top and bottom closure or tape position
  • Case print, label and product identity
  • Barcode, 2D code and SSCC reading
  • Visible case count or arrangement
  • Pallet layer pattern and missing cases
  • Protruding, displaced or damaged cases
  • Pallet label presence and position

Application details we review

Early clarity on these points helps avoid false rejects, blind spots and mechanical changes late in the project.

  • Case and pallet size range
  • Print and label location on each face
  • Conveyor speed and case spacing
  • Pallet presentation and wrap condition
  • Required interface to palletiser or WMS
  • Reject, hold or operator-response strategy

Inspect the despatch unit before it leaves the line

We map case and pallet checks to the available faces, handling equipment and production-data interfaces so failures can be contained before release.

Feasibility work establishes the camera view, lens, light, exposure and image-processing approach. We then define the enclosure, conveyor changes, controls, operator interface and rejection needed for production.

How we deliver

From feasibility to supported production

Inspection performance depends on the complete cell, so optics, mechanics, controls and rejection are developed as one project.

Define

Products, defects, speeds, environment and acceptance criteria.

Prove

Sample imaging, lighting trials and achievable defect limits.

Integrate

Mechanical design, guarding, PLC, recipes and reject tracking.

Support

Commissioning, operator training and production handover.

Case & pallet inspection questions

Technical questions, answered clearly

Can a camera count products inside a closed case?

Not through opaque board. Count evidence must be gathered before closure, inferred from a controlled upstream process, or checked with another appropriate technology.

Can pallet patterns be verified?

Yes. Cameras can compare visible layers or the completed load against expected geometry, subject to view access, wrapping, case similarity and required defect size.

Can case barcodes and pallet labels be linked?

Where production and line systems expose the necessary data, reads can be associated with the current order or pallet record. The interface and data ownership are defined during design.

How are failed cases handled?

Individual cases may be diverted to a rework lane. Pallets are more commonly held, alarmed or prevented from release for operator review.

Can stretch-wrapped pallets be inspected?

Some features remain inspectable, but reflective or wrinkled film can obscure labels and edges. The preferred inspection is often before wrapping, with a final label check afterwards.
